I fucking love Mom Jeans.

I fucking love Mom Jeans. They’re easily one of my favorite bands of the last few years, both live and on record. However, despite having such a large, devoted following, I haven’t seen many reviews, interviews or features on their music, which speaks not only to the level of grassroots connection they make through social media, but to the level at which they ride under the radar of both mainstream and independent online music publications.

With that said I’d like to take this moment to talk about how great they are. On their debut, 2016’s Best Buds, the Berkeley 4-piece weave clean guitar patterns with dirty, gnarkill power chords a’la Pavement but filter the slacker aesthetic through 90’s emo acts like Sunny Day Real Estate and American Football.

Standouts like ‘Edward 40hands‘, ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. my GPA‘ and my personal favorite, ‘Girl Scout Cookies‘ highlight the album’s cycling themes of self-hate vs. self-love, self-love vs. love for another, love for another vs. self hate, and constant, inescapable ennui, but balance those themes with enough sentimentality and charm to create songs about seeing the funny side of things instead of wallowing in your own depression.

Mom Jeans. is still on tour, but new songs have appeared on their Audiotree live session, (available on bandcamp), so expect new music soon and be sure to follow them on social media, because you will most likely hear any news from them directly.
